In Luke 20:1-8, the chief priests, scribes, and elders tried to entrap Jesus by asking him to tell them by what authority do thou have to do these things? or who is he that gave him this authority? The Merchants were selling items to the people for prices that were outrageous. They were desecrating the holy temple and making it into a den of robbers. So, when they asked Jesus who gave him the authority to act against them, Jesus turned the table on them. He answered their question with a question. He asked them was John’s baptism from heaven or of men. The arrogant men reasoned among themselves, but they realized that their answer to the question would not go well with the people. You see, their goal was not so much about asking Jesus a question, rather it was more about contempt and trying to get Jesus to blaspheme which would have given them reason to have Jesus put in jail. Although they knew who Jesus was, they ignored the fact that they could not mess with the Master and get away with it. Similarly, we cannot mess with Jesus by being hypocritical in our lives and think we will get away with it.
